Company History
Founded by several zinc industry veterans, Steel Dust Recycling (SDR) is a subsidiary of US Steel Dust Recycling, a Texas-based LLC formed in 2006. Steel Dust Recycling builds and operates Waelz Kiln processing plants to recycle EAF dust, a waste product of the Electric Arc Furnace method of melting scrap steel for re-use
The initial facility -- located in an industrial development near Millport, Alabama -- went on-line in June of 2008. The plant concentrates the zinc contained in the EAF dust into Waelz Oxide – which contains 55-60% zinc – and which will be sold to zinc smelters throughout the world. Waelz Iron -- a by-product of the zince recovery process -- will be sent to asphalt and cement production plants for re-use. Locating the Steel Dust Recycling plant in Northwest Alabama places the facility within 200-300 miles of multiple EAF steel mills, enabling it to efficiently use its capacity to process EAF dust and recover zinc.
